Accent Change and English Language Training

Sound system modification, pronunciation change and speech intelligibility for those who come from a non-English speaking background and for those whose native language is English.

Nel MacBean trained initially as a teacher of ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language). She holds postgraduate qualifications in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Mathematics and Education, while her undergraduate studies focused on Linguistics and foreign Languages (French, German and Japanese).

Nel began her professional life working in several language schools in Sydney, including the University of Technology, Sydney, catering to overseas students wishing to ameliorate their English language skills. She taught a variety of courses for adult and adolescent learners including General English, Business English, English for Teachers, Academic English, High School English preparation and study tours. In addition to holding several positions of leadership, and being involved in program development, she was also chosen to deliver a professional English teacher-training course to high school teachers in Seoul, South Korea.

Following this, Nel spent many years teaching ESL, French, German, Japanese and Mathematics to students in the Australian secondary school setting. She felt her natural professional progression was then to undertake training in speech pathology, and she qualified  with the Master of Speech Language Pathology from the University of Sydney.

As a qualified ESL/EFL/ Foreign Languages teacher and speech pathologist, coupled with her many years of experience in teaching, pronunciation training, foreign language learning and linguistics, Nel is well placed to help native and non-native speakers of English improve the clarity of their speech and enhance English pronunciation, and when desired, change their accent to Standard Neutral English. This may be for professional or social reasons, to build confidence or simply be better understood. Ultimately, it is to enhance communication.

Additionally, Nel provides English language training through both macro skill development (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) and micro skill instruction  (Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation and Spelling) for people who wish to have a more solid command of the English language.
